Almost no flashlight dies of a broken emitter. What kills them is water getting past a tailcap seal, or corrosion on the contacts from a cell left in over a wet summer. Both are avoidable: keep the threads clean, replace the o-rings when they get dry and chalky, and pull the cells out of anything you are storing for a season. A light treated that way outlasts three that are not.
