The 3M Peltor ComTac VIII protects your hearing while keeping you aware of what is going on around you. That is the whole design problem with serious hearing protection: block enough of the shot and you also block the voice, the footstep and the branch breaking behind you.

Some ComTac VIII versions carry a downlead cable for connecting to a radio through a push-to-talk, which is why this headset shows up on duty and range crews rather than only on benches.
